Simon and Susie asked us to turn their late 20th century house into a warmer, brighter and more efficient home. They wanted a home fit for the 21st century.
The house has been given a new lease of life and we’ve had very positive comments from our neighbours.Simon and Susie, clients
Our proposals reflect on how their needs as a family have changed over the past 20+ years of living in their home. They needed larger spaces for their extended family to socialise and relax at gatherings and flexibility for the house to accommodate their children and grandchildren on visits.
Making the best of the existing spaces was much more important than creating more. We remodelled the downstairs to create a more spacious, light filled entertaining space for their family.
Performance and sustainability were fundamental to the project. We wrapped the whole house in insulation, installed new double glazed windows and carried out air-tightness work and mechanical ventilation. This gave maximum benefit, with limited disruption and cost.
We made a huge reduction to the calculated heat demand from 224 kWh/m2.a to 52 kWh/m2.a.
An external upgrade that demands your attention
Externally the entire house needed dragging into the 21st century. The mock Tudor features felt very dated, despite being a staple of the estate. The odd roof shapes were rationalised and chamfered bay windows squared off. We applied a fresh render with dark timber cladding to give a cleaner more modern appearance.
Using our expertise to keep the project on track.
We supported Simon and Susi throughout their project. Our tender service helped them find the right builder, before we supported them through the construction phase. As a result, we were able to manage costs and ensure their project was completed on time and to a high standard.
From the initial visit to the design work to the contract administration, HEM did a great job in helping us set our priorities, understand the costings, and guiding us through the contract terms and implications.Simon and Susie, clients
