A contemporary self-build in Sheffield
Working with our clients, Ben and Hannah, we helped them update their existing early 20th-century semi-detached home to meet the demands of their modern lifestyle. Adding an extension to overcome issues with a small, cramped kitchen and creating a spacious third bedroom were priorities.
A house that feels new and modern whilst being eminently practical
We added a single-storey extension to the side of the house to create a large kitchen and dining space. To the side, there’s a functional utility room and shower room that connects to the garage. Ben and Hannah are keen cyclists, so it was important for them to have easy access to and from the garage with plenty of space to clean up after a long cycle.
The extension, finished in timber cladding to contrast against the red brick, leads out to the garden – ideal for entertaining. Upstairs, the small box room was converted to become a generous stair that leads up to a new main bedroom and en-suite in the converted attic space.
Our favourite part of the house is the kitchen, sitting on the steps drinking coffee, and the reactions we get every time someone new enters. It’s made it all worthwhile.
Ben & Hannah, Self-builders, Sheffield
A personal self-build
Ben and Hannah undertook almost all the work themselves. The quality and speed of work is testament to their energy and commitment to creating a beautiful home with lots of personal touches. Their design decisions have evolved the project beyond our construction drawings into something that’s, even more, special and unique.
Since taking on the project, Ben has graduated with an undergraduate degree in Architecture. His passion for buildings and space clearly shows in the finished home.
