We’re thrilled that our project Sort Trae, has been shortlisted for a prestigious RIBA Yorkshire Award.

Sort Trae is one of only seven building projects to be shortlisted and the only residential building up for this year’s Yorkshire awards.

The new build home in the village of Thurgoland in Barnsley was completed in September 2023 and was a collaboration between HEM Architects, Susi Clark the owner of Sort Trae and Marc Medland.

The exceptional two storey home is situated in Thurgoland’s hillside. Its sensitive design limits the impact on the surrounding homes whilst taking advantage of the fantastic views across the valley.

Noteworthy for its low energy design, Sort Trae meets stringent quality standards for airtightness, making it highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. HEM Architects’ expertise in designing Passivhaus homes, makes Sort Trae an example of sustainable living in the Yorkshire region.

The Passivhaus design not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes healthier living conditions by minimising draughts, maintaining stable indoor temperatures year-round, and improving air quality through mechanical ventilation.

Among its distinctive features, Sort Trae boasts expansive glazed areas set within striking charred timber cladding, complemented by concrete retaining walls that provide both structural support and aesthetic appeal.

The handcrafted sandstone spine serves as the centrepiece, adding texture and character to the interior. Additionally, bespoke stained ply kitchen fittings and oak accents throughout the home enhance its ambiance, exuding warmth and comfort.

Furthermore, Sort Trae doubles as Susi’s workspace, where she practises her craft as a Weaver and Textile Designer. Her studio, adjacent to the residence, serves as a creative hub where she teaches weaving and develops designs for exhibitions across Yorkshire and beyond.

The RIBA Yorkshire Awards celebrate architectural excellence in the region, with shortlisted projects reflecting changes and innovations in architecture, but also importantly improve and enhance people’s lives. The winners of the RIBA Yorkshire Awards will be announced later this year.

We are incredibly proud to have Sort Trae recognised by the RIBA. It is testament to the skills of Claire Taylor and Liam Seaman, our architects that were able to deliver Susi’s concept to such a high standard.

Paul Testa, Director, HEM Architects

We are grateful to Susi for trusting us with her vision and allowing us to push ourselves to be innovative and to deliver her beautiful Passivhaus home.

Alan MacDonald, Director, HEM Architects

The expertise of HEM Architects with a team of consultants and construction professionals has resulted in a house that has more than met my expectations. It is warm, calm and beautiful in environmental terms and also as my home.
