A garden room can add a new dimension to your home—a space where you can enjoy your garden from the comfort of your home. They can be vibrant workspaces, or a serene sanctuary. A well-designed garden room can become your favorite spot to unwind and connect with nature.
This month, the HEM Architects studio has picked their favourite garden rooms from other architects studios that really elevate the outdoor living experience of these homes.

Garden Room
neil dusheiko
“I’m a big fan of the tactile material palette – concrete, charred timber cladding and plywood interior – creating an engaging space, with a luxury feel, on a small scale.”
“The considered positioning of glazing helps ensure high levels of natural light but maintain an element of privacy from neighbours.”
“Built-in storage and an adaptable layout allows for flexible use, acting as important overspill for the family home, with a great connection to the garden.”

House in an Olive Grove
invisible studio
“Obviously it helps that this house is in an amazing setting but I’ve been enjoying seeing progress on Invisible studio’s house in an olive grove in Greece.”
“I love the rawness of the building and how it connects with the treetops and view beyond not just the garden at ground level.”
“It’s a really pared back building which is honest and striking. But at the same time it sinks into the background to let you appreciate the landscape around it.”

Bonnington Sunken Extension
Konishi Gaffney Architects
“This has always been a standout extension for me. Such an elegant use of simple materials which have been rigorously set out and beautifully detailed.”
“As it’s sunken, the garden is just below window cill level so feels immediate and close when sat indoors. I remember when it was initially published that the build budget was also incredibly low for such a crafted piece of design.”

Writer’s Shed
Surman Weston Architects
“The Writer’s Shed by Surman Weston Architects is one of my personal favorites. The whimsical timber-clad design blends effortlessly with the garden.”
“The large window floods the space with natural light but also frames the view, making it a wonderfully inspiring and peaceful spot. I particularly love how, at night, the soft glow from the timber cladding casts a warm, inviting light over the garden, creating a magical atmosphere that feels both cozy and creative.”

Longdrop
invisible studio
“Although not a garden room, I’ve always loved this unique outside compost toilet by Invisible Studio.”
“It is made using recycled materials from other projects and the waste is seperated and used as fertilisers.”
“Although I’m much happier using the toilets in the HEM office.”
