Our Favourite: Bungalows

This month we’ve picked out Our Favourite…..Bungalows. Single storey homes are soaring in demand, particularly with people that want to downsize. But they can also be some of the most thoughtful and energy efficient homes.

Here’s a selection of our favourites, from meticulous retrofits to smartly designed new builds. All of them making the most of their footprint, materials and setting.

Ochre Barn

“A fantastic conversion of a threshing barn in Norfolk.”

“Treating most of the insertions as furniture leaving the main volume of the building to be still legible is a clever approach to retaining the agricultural character of the building.”

Sea Spray

“The fact the retrofit started due to the home becoming damaged in a fire makes their motivation for retrofit all the more interesting!”

“The owners have pushed the essential upgrade works way beyond what was required, in favour of energy conservation.”

“The owner had clearly done their research on the Passivhaus EnerPHit standard, and the fact the home was a bungalow made it even more suitable for retrofit (due to its good form factor).”

“Interestingly, they went for EPS within the rafters too, the installation of which was done really well!”

Courtyard House

“I love the rhythmical street scene that’s been created by the chimneys.”

“It’s a repetitive layout but it doesn’t feel boring. Internally, the plans are really well thought through to make the most of a small amount of floor space. I bet they feel really spacious inside!”

Wood Shingles

“The thermal envelope has been improved with external insulation (EWI), and the attic has been partially opened to add volume to the main rooms.”

“The central circulation corridor effectively separates the private and social spaces, maximizing the use of the available footprint.”

Diabeg

“I’ve recently been enjoying looking at a range of single storey homes by Dualchas Architects.”

“This one at Diabeg in Wester Ross is one of my favourites and also one of the smallest. It’s a great example of a really clever plan that makes the most of a limited footprint and simple materiality.”

“The house really makes the most of its amazing setting in the highlands, but a similar layout would be equally perfect looking out onto a garden or courtyard.”

Tree Courtyard House

“It’s a contemporary 2 bedroom house in a conservation area. The project had a really tight footprint but employs a very efficient floor plan to make the house feel generous and spacious.”

“The house’s structure is formed from spruce cross-laminated timber (CLT) manufactured off-site and assembled within 5 days.”
