This month we’ve picked out Our Favourite…..Urban Infill homes. Infill sites might be small, awkward, or hidden in plain sight, but they offer some of the most exciting opportunities for creative, sustainable design. So we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite examples where these previously under utilised spaces have been transformed into beautiful new homes.

Pocket House
Tikari Works
“The site was previously occupied by a small, dilapidated garage. Pocket House is an excellent example of how single-dwelling infill projects can make use of urban leftover spaces, creating homes that are sustainable, compact, and integrated into their context.”
“The architects responded by strategically placing large windows and skylights to ensure daylight reached the deeper areas of the house.”

Corner House
31/44 Architects
“This is a fantastic project that is the antithesis of most speculative developments.”
“A redevelopment of an end of terrace and then a beautifully contextual new house that sits on a piece of land that no-one would have ever considered to be a building plot.”
“In its siting it appears to defy normal rules of development, breaking clear building lines – but it works. A very clever, but not shouty scheme.”

Church Walk
Mikhail Riches
“I love this project which transformed a derelict garage site in London into 4 new homes. The architects were also the developers and occupants of the building.”
“And I love how the guidance governing the impact of new buildings on the daylight enjoyed by neighbours drove the form and design of the building.”
“On top of that, there’s some beautiful spaces which are a regular feature on my Pinterest boards.”

Slot House
Sandy Rendel Architects
“I love the glazed bricks used on the front elevation and how they blend in with the street, but on closer look are actually something different.”
“The way the staircase divides the long thin space into rooms while bringing in light is really clever, and I love that even in such a small house they’ve included a double height space which makes the whole house feel so tall and spacious.”
“Exposing the structure to reduce the number of layers and therefore maximise the floor area works so well, and actually brings warmth and depth to the spaces. “

SkinnyScar
Gwendolyn Huisman and Marijn Boterman
“SkinnyScar is a project in Rotterdam. The extreme proportions of the plot resulted in a stacked open typology and a constructional challenge. Internally it has most of the common traits of skinny houses, including the soft division of different living spaces and carefully curated natural light.”

Slim House
Alma-nac
“alma-nac’s Slim House shows how great creativity can make the most of tight, restricted space with fixed parameters.”
“A daring brief and bold design resulting in an unconventional, quirky and engaging home.”
