People Powered Retrofit Case Study

Over the past 3 years we’ve been working with our clients Margaret and John to deliver a transformational deep retrofit of their bungalow on the West coast of Anglesey.

Margaret and John loved the house; it’s beautifully situated with lovely views, is filled with light and gets lots of sun. However, they wanted to hugely reduce its energy use and increase its comfort. As they have made a move from Manchester to Anglesey they had initially attended a number of People Powered Retrofit workshops. This led them getting an initial energy assessment from Urbed who then recommended us for the full retrofit design work.

We have a lovely, light, airy, comfy home… I come through the front door and it’s bliss

Works included:

  • floor insulation;
  • cavity wall insulation as well as external wall insulation and new render;
  • roof insulation and new triple glazed windows.

This was combined with extensive air-tightness detailing to hugely reduce space heating demand. They took the opportunity to add new internal finishes, kitchen and fitted storage. The heating has switched from oil to an air-source heat pump and they’ve installed a large solar array.

Visually, it’s a very subtle update, but we’ve managed to reduce space heating demand from 286 kWh/m2.a to 65 kWh/m2.a giving expected annual electricity bills of around £1100. They will then have the benefit of energy production from their solar power to offset a proportion of this cost.

And I’m still loving it – warm and airy and light and lovely, just as you promised, Paul. Wonderful. Thank you

John and Margaret’s decision to attend People Powered Retrofit workshops early in their retrofit journey has been transformational in their attitude and approach to the project. People Powered Retrofit have just published a case study of the project to help educate others interested in starting their retrofit journey. You can read it here.
