HEM Architects received a highly commended award in this year’s South Yorkshire Sustainability Awards in the Small Business of the Year category.
This is recognition of the hard work we’ve been doing in creating more sustainable and zero carbon homes in the region.
We’ve been huge champions of Passivhaus standards over the last few years. We’ve improved the energy efficiency of homes in the region – on average reducing energy consumption by 50% on conventional buildings.
This new build Passivhaus in Barnsley has a minimal energy demand, providing year round comfort and plenty of health benefits.
We are one of the only practices in the UK to offer retrofit services to help homeowners move towards a zero carbon home. Which has meant over the last year, we’ve worked on a number of retrofit projects to improve energy performance of clients homes.
We designed a low energy, two storey extension in Sheffield that used high levels of insulation in the new walls and existing spaces.
Retrofit and remodel
In addition, we’ve also continued to challenge and influence the industry to use retrofit as the default for existing buildings through articles in the national press and through regional forums and environmental groups.
As well as high quality insulation, we used triple glazed windows and an MVHR system to create a compact and incredibly low energy home.
Low energy, new build house
We’re really proud to receive this award. It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate how we’re setting the standards on designing beautiful, practical and zero carbon homes.
